Where the Cattle, Horses and Antelope Play

Day #15 Santa Fe NM to Colorado Springs Co

309 Miles

The weather was in our favor again as we started out this morning around 8:30. We were thinking of taking a secondary route through the mountains, but it was going to be just a little too long and tedious. We followed I25 North, through stunning grasslands and mountains. Very few towns, very few.

Lots of cattle, antelope, sheep and horses. We ACTUALLY saw a couple of real cowboys on horses herding cattle! Wonder if he looked like the Marlboro Man? (sigh)

Gas stations were few, far between and forty cents more per gallon...ouch. But then again, when there's only ONE gas station...

Leaving New Mexico and entering Colorado is a treat for the eyes on I25. We climbed a ridge, and as we rounded the curve at the top we were treated to an incredible view of a mountain range. They were majestic and covered with snow, probably the San Juans, that are in my opinion one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the country.

We are at a campground we've stayed at before, in 2003, with a view of Pike's Peak. Nice, but a little noisy. I call it planes, trains and automobiles...semis too. Made a nice grilled salmon dinner, watched American Idol (must have cable on AI nights!) ran out to Walmart for supplies and downloaded photos.

Not the most exciting day...but that can be a good thing too.
Tomorrow we are going to drive up Pike's Peak, it's over 14,000 feet, yikes!
