Tuesday's Ride From Hell

Day 22 Deer Lodge MT to Brigham City UT 388 Miles

Leaving Deer Lodge MT

One of those days on the road that makes traveling NOT so fun.

It was very nice when we left the campground at Deer Lodge, which smelled like cow poop...but was a nice place. The ride was fine to Butte and as soon as we made the turn South on I15 we started to encounter the WIND.

A fierce wind was holding us back (BAD gas mileage today) and when we made turns it plummeted us from side to side. One gust scared the crap out of Jim, he thought we were going to tip!

Although the terrain is very impressive, it give precious little to actually look at.

I mean, hills, canyons, cattle and a strip of interstate can get old mile after mile. My mind started to wander, trying to think of SOMETHING...

Hmmm, I wonder how many cattle I've seen so far on this trip? A million? I wonder if next year I'll be eating a steak from one I've actually laid eyes on? What are the chances? Why do they poop on the hay they are eating, why do they poop in the water hole? How stupid are they? Why do we eat them, they eat some nasty stuff! Wonder how the cows figure out which cows can get under the tree, 5,000 cows, one tree...

See what I mean?

Then, as if the wind wasn't enough...we noticed that it was getting hard to see the mountains in Idaho. Hazy, no....dusty. It had a brown tinge to it. Come to find out, they are plowing the fields...miles and miles of fields to plant....POTATOES! You didn't have to be a Jeopardy contestant to figure that one out I'll bet, after all, I told you we were in IDAHO.

The wind didn't stop for most of the day, finally somewhere we entered Utah, a kinder and gentler place. The wind was letting up. Jim's arms were cramped.

We chose a nice basic campground in Brigham City, named Golden Spike. We are close to where the railroad was completed from coast to coast in 18?? something, something. I'm too tired to google it.

Jim wanted to continue driving tomorrow toward the canyons, but I vetoed that. Three days of long drives is too much. This is a nice place with a good WIFI and cable. What else can you possibly want? The Salt Lake area has much to offer. We've been here three times in the past and there are still some things we haven't done. So tomorrow we will be doing some stuff around here and SLC which isn't too far down the road.

Besides, Norman is so tired of riding he wouldn't come out of his overhead cabinet all day!

Tomorrow will be a NON travel day...YAY!
